EU Achieves 263 GW Solar PV Capacity in 2023
(SolarPower Europe By Bethany Meban)
The European Union (EU) has marked a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey with a total installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity of 263 gigawatts (GW) as of 2023, positioning it as the world’s second-largest solar power producer. Solar PV now accounts for 9% of the EU’s electricity supply, reflecting a robust integration of renewable energy into the grid.
In the broader renewable energy context, the EU’s electricity generation from renewables has surged to 67%. This impressive figure highlights the region’s commitment to transitioning to greener energy sources. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the share of renewable energy in the EU’s power mix is expected to rise to 86% by 2030, with solar PV contributing 19% of this total. Looking further ahead, solar PV is projected to comprise 27% of the EU’s energy mix by 2050.
The EU’s ambitious targets are supported by ongoing technological advancements and favorable policy frameworks. Recent developments include large-scale solar projects and increased investments in solar technology, which are driving significant growth. Regional leaders such as Germany, Spain, and France have played crucial roles in this expansion, contributing substantial additions to the overall capacity.
These achievements underscore the EU’s leadership in the global renewable energy sector and its commitment to a sustainable future. With continued support for solar innovation and policy initiatives, the EU is well-positioned to meet its ambitious renewable energy targets and further solidify its role in the global energy transition.
