Germany Sets New Solar Record in 2024
Germany has once again demonstrated its leadership in renewable energy by installing 16.2 GW of new solar capacity in 2024, bringing the total to an impressive 99.3 GW by the end of the year. This surge in solar deployment, reported by the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), highlights the country’s steadfast commitment to a sustainable future.
Notably, the majority of these new installations were residential and commercial arrays, underscoring the widespread adoption of solar power among businesses and homeowners. Ground-mounted projects also played a significant role, contributing to the overall growth.
“The remarkable growth of photovoltaics continues,” said Klaus Müller, president of the Bundesnetzagentur. The newly deployed capacity in 2024 surpasses the previous record year of 2023, marking another milestone in Germany’s renewable energy journey.
Solar power generated 72.2 TWh in 2024, accounting for 14% of Germany’s total electricity output. This achievement was driven by the rapid expansion of solar capacity, despite less favorable weather conditions. Additionally, solar self-consumption saw an 18% year-on-year increase, with 12.4 TWh used domestically.
As Germany continues to expand its solar infrastructure, the country is setting a powerful example for the rest of the world. The future looks bright for solar energy, with continued growth and innovation paving the way for a greener, more sustainable planet.
